William (Bill) Anthony Cole RUDD, VX39694, 2/7 Field Coy RAE 9 Division, DoB 7 December 1917.

Bill Rudd was captured by the Germans at Ruin Ridge, El Alamein, on 28 July 1942, along with many others, about a battalion quickly became POWs. He escaped from an Italian Camp in Italy and, with others, made his way over the Swiss Alps to freedom.

Some years ago I had the privilege of having met Bill RUDD OAM - Although Bill was not a Rat of Tobruk, having disembarked in the Middle East 25/09/1941 and his Unit 2/7 Fld Coy left Tobruk 27/09/1941, I invited him down to Tobruk House to meet up with some of the Rats of Tobruk Veterans, who also Served at El Alamein. I found him to be a wonderful Gentleman, as they all were.

RATS of TOBRUK - Aust

Rats of Tobruk Aust Forces, Served in Units that are listed in the Order of Battle - Tobruk - April to November, 1941, at Tobruk, Libya - during the Siege of Tobruk, April 10 till December 7, 1941, for 241 Days, during the longest Siege in British Military History.

18th Brigade Units, were withdrawn from Tobruk by August 27, 1941.

All Units of the 9th Division, except for 2/13 Battalion, were withdrawn from Tobruk by October 26, 1941.

2/13 Battalion did not leave Tobruk until November 27, 1941, their ship having been attacked by Stukas, as it was approaching Tobruk Harbour, before they could embark.

RATS of TOBRUK - Allied

Allied Forces (UK, & Indian Cavalry) Served with Australian Troops, at Tobruk, Libya, during the Siege of Tobruk, for 241 days, from April 10 to December 7, 1941.

Allied Forces (Polish & Czech) took over from Australian Troops in August, 1941 and the Australian Troops (except for 2/13 Battalion, 20 Brigade, 9th Division) left Tobruk between August 17 and October 26, 1941 and returned to Palestine for Rest, Reinforcements and further Training.

2/13 Battalion were not able to leave Tobruk, because their ship was bombed by German Stukas and they were not able to embark. They continued to fight through till the end on the Siege.

This is a Map of the Middle East, in 1941 WW2, where our Rats of Tobruk trained, fought and visited while on leave, etc. It also contains a list of the various Hospitals, Training Battalions, Staging Camps, etc, that appear in the Service Records of our Rats.
